Know Your Rights

You have rights, regardless of your immigration status. Here is what you need to know to keep yourself and your family safe.

Important: This page provides general information, not legal advice. Every case is different.

If you encounter ICE or Police

Remember these four key steps to protect yourself.

1

You have the right to remain silent.

You do not have to answer questions about where you were born or your immigration status. Say loudly and clearly: "I am exercising my right to remain silent."

2

Do not open your door.

ICE cannot enter your home without a judicial warrant signed by a judge. Ask them to slide the warrant under the door or hold it up to a window. Do not open the door unless the warrant has your correct name and address on it.

3

Do not sign anything.

Do not sign any papers without speaking to a lawyer first. You might be signing away your right to see a judge or your right to stay in the U.S.

4

Make a plan today.

Memorize the phone number of a trusted friend or family member. Keep a copy of your important documents with someone you trust.
